![]() county fair, horse pavilion, part 1 At evening old wooden bones of the pavilion swell with light particles of hay and horse hair swirl lethargically in heavy air while the Tilt-a-whirl buzzes in the carnival next door I watch a child skip from stall to stall clambering up gates to lean and pet each long nose her hand smaller than an ear three long strokes from horse eye to nostril eye peeking between old boards like someone hiding in a closet then, on to the next compartment for her skin-to-skin inventory . . .
