![]() Lake Michigan Hoffmaster State Park Muskegon, Michigan shot March 5, 2007 At last we are at the top of the sand dune we climbed treacherously. Ah, you were so tireless and patient. You are looking at Lake Michigan, the second largest of the five Great Lakes (can you name them?). In the middle at the shore, between the trees, you can see what I will show you in greater detail a few days from now, how the sand and ice and snow form in unique ways. The Great Lakes shoreline equals almost 44 % of the circumference of the earth. Lake Michigan is the sixth largest fresh water lake in the world. Its average depth is 269 feet (85 meters) and is the only one of the Great Lakes entirely within the United States. Lake Michigan (321 mi long x 118 mi) is a little smaller than the Adriatic Sea (426 mi x 142 mi), to give you an idea. I'll show you a few more scenes hiking from here to the beach, and one final - and astonishing I think - waterfront scene.
