Ross Castle

Ross Castle
Killarney National Park, County Kerry, southwest Ireland

We saw this castle at the start of our Lough Leane (Lower Lake) cruise on the small motorboats posted yesterday. I was busy talking through the logistics of getting 34 people on boats with the nice lady who ran the place (she's in the fifth generation of the family business that runs the lake tours), so I didn't get a chance to explore the castle.

It was built in the late 1400s by the O'Donoghues. Wiki has a spooky story:

'There is a legend that O’Donoghue leaped or was sucked out of the window of the grand chamber at the top of the castle and disappeared into the waters of the lake along with his horse, his table and his library. It is said that O’Donoghue now lives in a great palace at the bottom of the lake where he keeps a close eye on everything that he sees.'

You can see the weather was a bit inclement, but a few raindrops didn't bother me. I rather liked the heightened sense of the macabre with this sky. Yet, I'm kinda glad I didn't know the legend about O'Donoghue living below the waves until after our cruise.
