bluebird

Eastern bluebird

Sorry about the corner of the gutter, but maybe that accentuates the wonder of the photo (that the bluebird is right by our house).

Long story short: I heard scratching in our thankfully-not-burning wood stove. A bird had gotten in before, so I knew that was probably what it was, grabbed my camera and opened windows and doors before opening the wood stove. (I know, I know, we have to repair the hole in the mesh on the flue.)

Out flew two birds: a male and a female bluebird! Bluebirds rarely show themselves near houses, let alone make their way INTO one. But then they couldn't find their way out. So I had to pick each one up! The female resisted, but I was able to gently calm her wings and pick her up, let her outside and watch her fly away. The male sat stunned by the piano and didn't resist my tender grasp to help him find freedom. But he only dropped to the porch and sat there, unmoving. I was terrified. But then, he flew to the wire, thank God!
