'melody in f'

An artist and woodblock carver, Gwen Frostic is a northwest Michigan icon. She passed away in 2001 the day before her 95th birthday, but she left a legacy of simple art through her hand carved woodblocks of nature. I grew up loving her work because my mother and sisters did, and her books and stationery were scattered around our house.

Also, we were lucky enough to have a family cottage down the lane from hers at Crystal Lake, not too far from Benzonia where her Presscraft Papers industry was located.

She named her cottage “Melody in F” and this is part of the address sign that is still in front of her home at Crystal Lake. The “Melody in F” was in shadow, or I would have shown you.

See some of her art, story and beautiful shop here. As that site says, she wrote her own epitaph:

“Here lies one doubly blessed.
She was happy and she knew it.”
