The history and systems of Paris’ sewers is legendary, with epidemics and then gradual improvement of regulations preventing dumping waste into the Seine. Twice a day Paris city streets are cleaned, pulling water from the Seine for at least some of it. This is problematic because of the street pollutants that are carried back to the river, particularly lead. I am trying to research more on this subject. I'm sure you Parisians and francophiles could inform us further.
